“He has a storyteller’s
ability that makes each
note sound important.”
– Jazzwise Magazine (UK)
A trio forged together so strongly that the musicians find themselves working together in multiple contexts. Tuomarila has created a sensation with his trio with Mats Eilertsen and Olavi Louhivuori, highlighting the trio’s almost telepathic communication. This music is filled with emotional and melancholy warmth balanced with a rhythmical drive.
Alexi Tuomarila Trio »
Drifter is a Belgium based quartet co-led by Finnish pianist / composer Alexi Tuomarila and Belgium saxophonist / composer Nicolas Kummert. The new phase in the quartet’s history sees the band fuse the youthful energy and vibrancy of ten years ago with the experience of a decade on tour playing with some of the biggest names in the European Jazz scene.
“Tuomarila’s playing, a rich, expansive vocabulary that is never flaunted but put to compositional ends within the framework of his improvisations, has a very Scandinavian feel to it: a lyrical intensity that eschews prolixity, and a folk song-like flavor…mixed with a touch of a of the profound melodicism of Sibelius.” – Stuart Nicholson/Is Jazz Dead?

Alexi Tuomarila joins forces with singer Martin Alvarado (ARG) and saxophonist Eero Koivistoinen on an exploration of musical genres. The fresh trio unit will release their debut album Alma via Start Records in October, 2019. The compositions reflect the beauty of Argentinian tango melodies and atmosphere mixed together with jazz improvisation and language.
Skinny Jenny is Alexi Tuomarila piano/keyboards, Tuomas Timonen drums/vocals and Timo Kämäräinen guitar/vocals. “Skinny Jenny have travelled so far they can’t even see tradition in the rearview mirror. Pop, rock, electronic influences, all filtered through an improvising sensibility and distilled into a series of songs…” – Dave Foxall/a Jazz Noise
Kingdom is Alexi’s new trio album with long term comrades Mats Eilertsen and Olavi Louhivuori, following the successful release of Seven Hills in 2013. Worldwide release date May 5th, 2017!
